“Works of art are viewed by people. They are heard by people. They are felt by people. They are not just the fodder of a close-knit group of initiates. They are the soul food of all people.” – L. Ron Hubbard
HAVENWOOD TALES Author, D.J. Houston
. . . was eleven months old when she toddled solo to a neighbor’s porch, rapped on the bottom of the latched screen door and uttered her first discernible sentence:
“Ope dee doh, Happy!”
Neighbor Happy and his wife Helen did open their door, and grinned when they found her there. And D.J. Houston has been getting “Happy” to open doors in life around her ever since.
Today the author is a forever-young American mom and grandmother with a keen eye on society’s future. And like good folks everywhere, she hopes her work can count for something.
Never short of adventures with people of all rank and kind during her professional career span as a musician, actress, video producer, photographer, script editor and business woman — not to mention parent — D.J. Houston’s insights as a Human Rights reformer and award-winning poet merge with her experience to lend humor and compassion to the worlds she creates in her debut novel series, HAVENWOOD TALES.
D.J. Houston on Art of Writing
My works evolve like children, struggling to seek their destinies. But unlike my flesh and blood children, I have the option to grow my written creations into precisely whatever I choose.
And after I craft and cut and hone and moan and push and pull them around like so much silly putty, there comes a time when – if I will just listen and let them say what they say and become what they are – they might actually turn out divine.
That’s “the zone” for me as an Artist — that frame of mind where COMMUNICATION is king. Did I write what I wanted to get across? And is it of sufficient quality that my reader can understand it? In my book, any quest for technical perfection is thereby resolved.
