“Works of art are viewed by people. They are heard by people. They are felt by people. They are not just the fodder of a close-knit group of initiates. They are the soul food of all people.” – L. Ron Hubbard
HAVENWOOD TALES Author, D.J. Houston
D.J. Houston was eleven-months-old when she toddled solo to a neighbor’s porch, rapped on the bottom of the latched screen door and uttered her first discernible sentence:
“Ope dee doh, Happy!”
Neighbor Happy Taylor and his wife Helen did open their door, and grinned when they looked down and saw her. And D.J. Houston has been getting “Happy” to open doors in life around her ever since.
Encountering people of all rank and kind during her various professional careers as a musician, actress, video producer, photographer, script editor, environmental and health products entrepreneur and businesswoman—not to mention being a parent—she has never been short of adventure.
Today the author is a forever-young American mom and grandmother with a keen eye on society’s future. Like good folks and authors everywhere, she hopes her work can count for something and serve to inspire the future.
Her insights as a Human Rights reformer and award-winning poet merge with unique life experience to lend humor and compassion to the worlds she creates in her debut novel series, HAVENWOOD TALES.
On The Art of Writing
“My works evolve like children, struggling to seek their own destinies. But unlike my flesh and blood children, I have the option to mold the writings into precisely what I choose.
“And after I craft and cut and hone and moan, and push and pull my creations around like so much silly putty, there comes a time when—if I will just listen, and let them say what they say and become what they are—they might actually turn out fine. Or even devine.
“That’s ‘the zone’ for me as an Artist—that frame of mind where COMMUNICATION is king.
Did I write what I meant to get across? Is it clear enough so that readers can understand, feel and enjoy it? These are the simple criteria that resolve my quest for perfection.”
